About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a basic knit hat pattern that’ll work for just about any yarn in your stash in just about any size you can think of, you’re in the right place. Our everyday knit hat for lightweight and medium-weight yarn is a perfectly simple pattern that’s easy and quick to knit.

With this pattern, you’ll get to practice three basic components of knit hats: a simple rib band, stockinette sides, and basic crown decreasing for a perfect fit. You don’t have to be a pro knitter either. As long as you have a basic understanding of knitting in the round and keeping steady tension, the tutorial will walk you through it all.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions and a tutorial to walk you through our everyday knit hat from start to finish.

Although the general pattern is the same for both lightweight and medium-weight yarn, there are differences in stitch count. To keep it simple, we kept the instructions separate for lightweight and medium-weight yarn.

When knitting the crown, switch to the magic loop method or double-pointed needles when the stitches no longer fit around the 16″ circulars.
