This book outlines their Metabolic Blowtorch Diet, technically a Targeted Intermittent Fasting approach. There are several things I appreciated about it:
1- Jay and Jim foreground their bonafides. They both have decades of experience in the physique and body recomposition arena, walk the walk, and demonstrate they know the literature and lingo, referencing other thought leaders such as Martin Berkhan of LeanGain, Lyle McDonald of Body Recomposition, Jay Robb and popular approaches such as IIFYM (If It Fits your Macros). I enjoy reading insights from authorities who've read what I have and more, and better still, seem to grok the source material. That tells me it may be a worthy investment of my time, as I'm less likely to have some trump card insight in my back pocket disqualifying their words. Which is to say, Jay and Jim have credibility.
2- They do a great job of inserting themselves into the beginner mind. A common concern around IF (Intermittent Fasting) is the loss of muscle and/or the down regulation of the metabolic rate. Early on, they address these concerns and massage them away. This has the advantage of helping put readers at ease, and for those already familiar with the benefits of IF, it reaffirms the choice.
3- The book is well organized. The basic practice is outlined, sample days and exercise routines are included, and they demonstrate examples of how to calculate specific caloric needs based on individual circumstances. They include recommended high-quality macronutrient sources to incorporate into one's diet, and supplements to consider.
4- A big emphasis for Jay and Jim is not just body recomposition but improving mental acuity. That information was somewhat new to me. It turns out, fasting in addition to fat loss and insulin sensitivity-enhancing benefits, may also improve mood and cognition through the effects of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. They include a bonus chapter outlining some of the current research and best practices regarding this. Why is this important? Because there's more to life than looking good naked. Of course we all want to be lean and attractive and functional into senescence. But then what? After you look great, why not also be productive with purpose to your life, so you can transform the world and contribute meaningfully. This chapter is brief but strong; perhaps as more research comes in, it would be a worthy future book or article topic.
Some Recommendations:
1- I'd like more information of finding and training meal prep assistance. As Jim and Jay mention, having readily available high quality food on hand will make compliance much easier so you can get maximum benefit from the protocol. They mention Fiverr, Care.com or Craigslist as resources, but as someone unfamiliar with this, I feel ill-suited to pursue that option. I see myself flailing about wasting an assistant's time, unable to explain what I'm looking for. I'd love to see more details on hiring and training a meal-prep aide, perhaps in one of their upcoming articles for Iron Man Magazine.
2- As someone outside of a major city, I'd also like to see more information on the supplemental resources, such as body fat composition testing. It seems like a great tool, but are there options for those without nearby access to a DXA machine or BodPod? Again, maybe a good topic for an article or blog post.
Conclusions
The book is well researched, well-laid out and comes from eminently qualified authors. If you're looking to enhance your physique and improve your biomarkers, the Metabolic Blowtorch Diet is an actionable guide to experiment with. Thanks Jay and Jim.

I'm not sitting here taking the time to write this review because I'm some biased guy doing it as a gesture of friendship. I'm doing this because I believe in it, I use it, and I know it will work for anyone who commits to it, ANYONE. Intermittent fasting is not new to the scene, it's been around the block for awhile. But, this version is unlike the rest. It's broken down in a way that's easy to understand for the beginner who has zero prior knowledge, yet packed with insight and differences from prior IF protocols that even the most advanced Intermittent faster will come away feeling like they've learned an entirely new method.
The benefits from this diet go far beyond what most who purchase it want to get from it... looking good naked. Not only will it make a difference in your physical appearance, but the impact it will have on you mentally is nothing short of amazing. We've all been programmed into believing you have to eat six meals a day, or "you have to have a quality breakfast to start your day, for energy" etc. What I found was the complete opposite. I found that late afternoon crash I would seemingly always have regardless of how solid my nutrition or amount of sleep was, became a thing of the past when I STOPPED consuming food for large chunks of the day. Never have I been more energized, and mentally alert throughout the day than when I'm using the metabolic blowtorch diet.
Stop endlessly, and aimlessly searching for a diet to do. Nothing in life is easy, the first week or two might be a little rough as your body adapts and you fight off the initial hunger pangs. Don't quit on yourself, don't give up, I promise you it gets much easier after a week or two that you'll be amazed out how much LESS hungry you become. As long as you stick with and follow the diet plan there is absolutely ZERO reason you won't not burn fat faster than anything else you've tried before. And you'll be amazed on every other aspect of what will come from it including your mental well being. This is simply the BEST diet by far I've tried, and for so many reasons beyond just fat loss. Do yourself a favor and get on this NOW.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2019If you understand the benefits of muscle confusion to grow muscle, you will say “duh” about energy confusion to burn fat and grow muscle. All the mystery about how to eat right to burn fat and maintain or grow muscle is GONE. All the long-term issues with other methods, RESOLVED. This is the easiest to maintain and most effective program I have ever tried. I understand how the totally committed can have outstanding results with this program, but so can the average person!
I am not a fitness guy, just an average 55 y/o desk jockey, office worker with a family and other after work commitments. I have always struggled to maintain a body fat (BF) percentage below twenty. I may work like crazy to get to mid-teens for the summer, but it always comes back between Labor Day and New Years. I read the book and was amazed that I already had the right pieces, just not in the right cycle to make it work efficiently. Now I eat a regular dinner with my family every night – whatever they are having. Breakfast and lunch are my options – and confusion is easy to follow.
Six months later, I dropped five pounds – but lost fourteen pounds, eight percent, body fat and gained four pounds of muscle with less effort than ever!! I have never maintained 13-15% BF for more than 30 days in my entire life – until now!! My energy levels are up. My mental focus is better than ever. Every week, it continues to get better – BF getting lower, total weight holding steady. This is the first time I can actually believe I can get to and maintain single digit body fat. This cycle plan works!!

As a previous subscriber of his TRT manual, all I could say is Jay and his team are one of the most accomplished in their fields, bringing cutting edge science in easily adaptable ways, to optimize ones results. The book is thoughtfully laid out and makes it very easy for the user to implement the various strategies based on their needs. A definite 5 🌟.

This is a great book overall, with good advices and routines that when followed certainly results in fat loss.
I gave 3 stars instead of 5 due to the humongous amount of advertising for other products owned by the author, which are incredibly overpriced (300 USD for a 90 days "program", 70 USD for some nootropic stack).

I am no stranger to Intermittent Fasting as I am part of Dr. Fung's program. However this book takes IF to a whole new level and incorporates training and optimized fat burning/muscle building to the ultimate goal of boosting your metabolism. This is an important book, particularly for those who have struggled with weight loss due to insulin resistance. I love the clear, clean writing style and the stellar references. My weight loss has stalled on a Keto diet and IF and this book is just what I need to take it to the next level. I can't wait to get started!!!!!

Jay and Jim have hit the nail on the head with The Metabolic Blowtorch Diet (MBTD).
If you're a health and fitness junkie constantly on the lookout for the next and newest diet technique to add to your arsenal, to really take your training over the edge... or even a raw beginner looking for a supremely solid foundation to launch your diet efforts off of, either way, you owe it to yourself to at least leaf through a copy of this groundbreaking book.
If you don't feel like reading dozens of scientific lab reports and sports science studies to get down to the nitty-gritty on what makes "the best" diet? Great! You're in luck. You can still get all this info distilled down and mainlined straight into your brain by way of The Metabolic Blowtorch Diet.

Comprehensive guide to intermittent fasting. Having read through this book once I’ve started to successfully incorporate elements into my own weight loss program.
There’s lots of detail and it’s not a book you can digest in one pass so I intend to read through it again and absorb the information in bite sized chunks.
